CBD shop focuses on education as much as commerce

Lavender House CLT co-owners Wilfredo Rosa and Lindsey Smith will open the hemp-derived product shop May 5.

Cannabidoil is nothing to be afraid of.

Husband and wife business partners Wilfredo Rosa and Lindsey Smith want to help people see the benefits of CBD, as it is commonly referred to, when they open Lavender House CLT on May 5 at 1101 E. 36th St. from 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. Free CBD candy sampling will be available for adults.

Lavender House CLT, which specializes in hemp-derived products, offers organic CBD oil, lip balm, pain salve, massage oil, CBD-themed merchandise, hand sanitizer and candy flavors.

Collective U.S. market CBD sales are projected to surpass $20 billion by 2024 according to BDS Analytics and Arcview Market Research. Yet that is not what drew the couple to the industry. It was the death of Rosa’s parents that drew him to cannabis.

“I was inspired by personal experiences,” Rosa said. “I lost my mom and my dad from cancer. All of us going through life, we have all had someone who has had cancer or something wrong with them. I was wondering how I could educate myself and educate other people on [the benefits of] CBD.”

CBD’s common misconception is that it results in a high, which it will not. It is derived from the hemp plant, which a Harvard University report describes as a “cousin of the marijuana plant.” While primary cannabinoids are CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol, it is the latter, often referred to as THC that causes the high sensation. THC is not present in CBD.

“I want people to know that CBD has nothing to do with marijuana,” Rosa said. “A lot of people get scared when they hear CBD. They right away associate it with marijuana and getting high. The first thing I do is let people know there is no THC. You are not going to get high. You are not going to feel any effects of THC in any CBD products.”

A 2017 World Health Organization report said: “CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.” The report goes on to detail diseases CBD provided therapeutic benefits for, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, depression, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help suppress nausea and people experiencing pain not related to disease.

“If you have a lot of inflammation, anxiety, you cannot sleep, [a] cancer patient or have diabetes, these are the wellness benefits of CBD,” Rosa said.
